How to Calculate the Capacity of Rectangular or Square GRP Water Storage Tank

Calculating the capacity of a GRP water tank depends on its Length, Width and Height. Here are the most common methods:

Formula:The volume V is calculated as:

V=Length×Width×Height

GRP SMC Sectional Water Tank

Steps:

  1. Measure Internal Dimensions:
    Use a tape measure to record the inside dimensions (in any unit):

    • Length (L): Longest horizontal side.

    • Width (W): Shorter horizontal side (equal to length for square tanks).

    • Height (H): Vertical distance from the base to the top rim.

  2. Convert Units (If Necessary):
    Ensure all dimensions are in the same unit (e.g., meters, feet, inches).

    • Conversion Factors:

      • 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)

      • 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in)

  3. Calculate Volume:
    Multiply the three dimensions:

    Vcubic=L×W×H

    Result is in cubic units (e.g., m³, ft³, cm³).

  4. Convert to Desired Capacity Unit:

    • For Liters (L):

      • If dimensions in meters (m):

        Vliters=(L×W×H)×1000

        (Example: 2 m×1.5 m×1 m=3 m³=3×1000=3000 L)

      • If dimensions in centimeters (cm):

        Vliters=L×W×H1000

        (Example: 200 cm×150 cm×100 cm=3,000,000 cm³=3,000,000/1000=3000 L)

      • If dimensions in feet (ft):

        Vliters=(L×W×H)×28.3168

        (Example: 6.56 ft×4.92 ft×3.28 ft≈106 ft³=106×28.3168≈3000 L)

      • If dimensions in inches (in):

        Vliters=(L×W×H)×0.0163871

        (Example: 78.74 in×59.06 in×39.37 in≈183,000 in³=183,000×0.0163871≈3000 L)

    • For US Gallons (gal):

      Vgallons=Vliters÷3.78541

      (Example: 3000 L÷3.78541≈793 gal)

Key Notes:

  • GRP-Specific Considerations:

    • Account for internal reinforcements (e.g., baffles, ribs) by reducing the measured height/width slightly if they intrude into the tank space.

    • Ensure measurements exclude the thickness of walls (measure from inside surface to inside surface).

  • Precision: Use consistent units and precise tools. Round the final result to 2 decimal places.

  • Safety: The calculated capacity is the total physical volume. Operational fill levels should be ≤90% to allow for expansion.

Example Calculation:

Tank Dimensions:

  • Length =2.5 m

  • Width =1.2 m

  • Height =1.8 m

Volume in Liters:

V=(2.5×1.2×1.8)×1000=5.4×1000=5400 L

Volume in US Gallons:

V=5400÷3.78541≈1427 gal

Final Answer:

The tank capacity is 5400 liters or 1427 US gallons.

Remember: Always verify with manufacturer specifications if available, as GRP water tanks may have design variations affecting net capacity.
